Here's what a real session looks like

Design a URL shortener like bit.ly. Walk me through your high-level architecture first — what components would you use and how do they interact?
I'd start with a client sending a request to a load balancer, which routes to app servers. App servers generate a short hash, store the mapping in a database, and cache hot URLs in Redis.
Good. Now your system gets 100 million new URLs per day. How does that change your database choice? And what happens when a node goes down?
At that scale I'd shard the database by hash prefix. For availability, I'd replicate across zones with health checks. The load balancer can route traffic away from a failed node within seconds.
What about cache invalidation? If a user deletes a short URL, how do you make sure stale entries don't serve old redirects?
